Guatemala Director of Church Mobilization Jose Salazar joined the World Orphans team in 2018. In his role, Jose finds great joy in coming alongside local pastors to encourage and equip them for the work to which they have been called. Jose says, “I am not in this position to tell pastors what to do or do it for them, but to empower them to continue in the ministry in these difficult areas.” He is deeply passionate about seeing the Gospel transform lives across the city, including in the most difficult regions.
Prior to joining the World Orphans family, Jose owned his own business and worked in missions in Chichicastenango—a rural area of Guatemala—for 15 years, where he focused on building homes for widows. Jose’s heart for family preservation runs deep in his story, as he was involved in foster care for six and a half years, believing in the power of leading his community by example. Additionally, Jose worked to mobilize the church to care for orphans by preaching in area churches, organizing Orphan Sunday events, and providing support and training to a small group of local volunteers.
Jose is married to his wife, Shari, and together they have three biological children: Rebekah, Micah, and Sofiah. In addition to those children, Jose and Shari have welcomed Mariana and Luis, former foster children, into their family. Mariana and Luis have successfully been reunited with their biological family, but they continue to count Jose and Shari as family. When Jose isn’t working or volunteering in his local community, he may be sipping coffee, playing sports, or reading.
